Fort Huachuca in the Running for Space Force Mission — What That Could Mean for Sierra Vista

Big news just dropped that could launch Sierra Vista into an entirely new orbit — and I’m not just talking hype.

On July 15th, Congressman Juan Ciscomani announced his full support for Fort Huachuca as one of the top contenders for a new U.S. Space Force mission and squadron. If selected, this wouldn’t just be a win for the Fort — it could mean massive opportunities for our whole region.

So what’s happening?

The Department of the Air Force is in the process of picking a base for a new Space Force mission focused on space awareness for Combatant Commands. Basically, it’s a squadron designed to help defend our assets in space and maintain the upper hand in future military operations. Think high-level surveillance, tracking, and protection of satellites and systems we rely on every day — for national security and beyond.

Fort Huachuca is one of just four installations under consideration nationwide. Why? Because we’ve got what others don’t.

Congressman Ciscomani said it best: Fort Huachuca has “unmatched airspace” and top-tier technical capabilities. That’s not just political talk — that’s decades of strategic development, open skies, and a community that’s always supported innovation in defense and intelligence.

And don’t forget — Southern Arizona is already known as the Astronomy Capital of America. We’ve got the clear skies, the elevation, the infrastructure, and the brainpower to back a mission like this.

Dr. Randy Groth, President of the Fort Huachuca 50, summed it up perfectly:

“This could place Sierra Vista and the surrounding community in a lead position for the space economy.”

Let that sink in for a second.

This isn’t just good news for the military. If Fort Huachuca is chosen, we could see:

  • High-paying tech and engineering jobs brought to our area

  • Increased federal investment in infrastructure and support services

  • Boosts to local schools, housing, and small businesses

  • Sierra Vista gaining national attention as a leader in space operations

As a local Realtor® who works with a lot of military families, I know how important the Fort is to our economy and our identity. This potential Space Force mission could take that to the next level.

And if you’re a homeowner or thinking about buying here? This is a signal to pay attention. A selection like this can mean long-term stability, property value growth, and expanded opportunity for everyone living in the Sierra Vista area.

This is just the beginning of the process — but we’re in the running. And I’m proud to live in a community that keeps showing up as the smart choice for the future of defense and space innovation.
